JPG vs PNG vs WebP: choose by image type and purpose

A practical format comparison for photographs, screenshots, graphics, transparency, and web publishing.

Start with the image, not a universal winner

JPG/JPEG is usually a sensible starting point for photographs and other continuous-tone images. PNG is useful for transparency, crisp interface screenshots, and graphics where lossless edges or text matter. WebP supports both lossy and lossless-style use cases and can be a good web delivery format when your publishing stack supports it.

File size depends on the source, dimensions, detail, and settings. Compare the visual result at the size visitors will see; do not infer savings from the extension alone.

Decisions that matter

  • Photographs: compare JPG and WebP at an acceptable quality.
  • Screenshots and text-heavy graphics: inspect small text and sharp edges before converting.
  • Transparency: preserve PNG when its alpha channel is important, or test a WebP equivalent.
  • Browser delivery: use the format your site, CMS, and fallback strategy can reliably serve.
  • Preserve the original when it is an editable master, already suitable, or conversion introduces visible artifacts.
